Chiral active matter

چکیده
Chiral active matter comprises particles which can self-propel and self-rotate. Examples range from sperm cells bacteria near walls to asymmetric colloids pea-shaped Quincke rollers. In this perspective article we focus on recent developments in chiral matter. After briefly discussing motion at a single particle level, discuss collective phenomena ranging vortex arrays patterns made of rotating micro-flocks states featuring unusual rheological properties.

Chiral Symmetry in Matter
We provide a schematic view to some general aspects of chiral symmetry in matter using mean-eld arguments. We use a simpliied version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model to formulate the ideas behind the thermodynamics at work in a variety of models with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry but without connnement. This version of the model is mapped onto chiral random matrix models, with some empha...

Soft-pion theorems are used to show how chiral symmetry constrains the contributions of low-momentum pions to the quark condensate, the pion decay constant and hadron masses, all of which have been proposed as signals of partial restoration of chiral symmetry in matter. These have contributions of order T 2 for a pion gas or of order mπ for cold nuclear matter, which have different coefficients...
متن کاملChiral Dynamics and Nuclear Matter
We calculate the equation of state of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter in the threeloop approximation of chiral perturbation theory. The contributions to the energy per particle Ē(kf ) from oneand two-pion exchange diagrams are ordered in powers of the Fermi momentum kf (modulo functions of kf/mπ). It is demonstrated that, already at orderO(k4 f ), two-pion exchange produces realistic nuclear b...
متن کاملActive Matter
The term active matter describes diverse systems, spanning macroscopic (e.g. shoals of fish and flocks of birds) to microscopic scales (e.g. migrating cells, motile bacteria and gels formed through the interaction of nanoscale molecular motors with cytoskeletal filaments within cells). Such systems are often idealizable in terms of collections of individual units, referred to as active particle...
متن کاملDiffusion of active chiral particles.
The diffusion of chiral active Brownian particles in three-dimensional space is studied analytically, by consideration of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density of finding a particle at position x and moving along the direction v[over ̂] at time t, and numerically, by the use of Langevin dynamics simulations. The analysis is focused on the marginal probability densi...
